The reason your shelf fell down is that a plastic drywall anchor was rated for 20 pounds in half-inch drywall, and your wall is 80-year-old plaster over lath holding 35 pounds of books.
There is a correct fastener for every wall type and every load, and picking it is most of the job. We carry toggles, self-drilling anchors, molly bolts, plaster screws, and the low-tack systems that genuinely leave nothing behind.
For anything under about 5 pounds we can usually go completely hole-free with the right adhesive system, applied to a properly prepped surface so it doesn't peel the paint off on the way down.

Will this cost me my deposit?
That's the entire point of doing it properly. Small nail holes are almost always normal wear and tear. What costs you a deposit is a blown-out anchor hole the size of a quarter, or adhesive strips ripping the paint off. We size fasteners to the load and prep surfaces so neither happens.
Do the command-strip style products actually work?
For light, flat items on clean painted drywall, genuinely yes. They fail on textured walls, on glossy or freshly painted surfaces, in humid bathrooms, and above about 5 pounds. We'll tell you which of your items are candidates and which need a real fastener.
My walls are plaster and everything cracks.
Classic Boston triple-decker. Plaster is brittle at the face and needs a pilot hole and a slow, low-torque drive. Done right there's no cracking. Done with a fast impact driver, you get a crater — which is why so many students think their walls are cursed.
